The Ministry of Education says it has found no proof to back recent allegations that admission into some Senior High Schools, including Aburi Girls’, was being sold for thousands of cedis.
The allegations, which went viral on social media last week, suggested that parents were being charged as much as GH¢5,000 to secure placement for their wards.
The claims triggered public anger and renewed calls for an independent probe.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, September 27, 2024, the Ministry’s Media Relations Officer, Hashmin Mohammed, explained that both the Ministry and national security operatives investigated the matter but uncovered no wrongdoing.
“Before the placement process began, we carried out a nationwide campaign to remind parents and guardians that the Computerised School Placement is completely free. You don’t need to pay any money to any official or middleman. So far, every allegation we’ve examined has turned out baseless,” he said.
Mr. Mohammed described the bribery claims as attempts by some individuals to push a false narrative that the placement system is compromised.
He urged the public to assist by reporting with evidence if they encounter any genuine case of extortion or bribery.
“If anyone has proof that money was paid to an official or a third party, we encourage you to present it. We are ready to take swift action,” he assured.
