The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce, on Tuesday, December 3, oversaw the destruction of defective ballot papers recalled by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The process was conducted under strict supervision, with constituency election directors from all political parties monitoring the exercise from their respective armouries to the regional dumpsite along the Akwadum road.

The EC had earlier suspended the Special Voting exercise in the Eastern and Western regions due to breaches involving these defective ballots.

With the exception of Afram Plains North and South constituencies, all 31 remaining constituencies in the Eastern Region submitted their defective presidential and parliamentary ballots for destruction.

The Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, John Appiah Baffour, expressed satisfaction with the process. Speaking to Citi News, he remarked:

“The exercise has been very successful. We brought all the parties together—the constituency executives of the NPP, NDC, and CPP—and all of them were present. They checked the seals on the ballot paper bags and confirmed that everything was intact before we offloaded them and burned them. So it has been very successful.”

This transparent and collaborative process reinforced public confidence in the integrity of the electoral system.
