The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced it is going on Christmas break for 26 days amid election disputes.
A statement issued on Monday on December 21 2020, and signed by the deputy Chair Dr Bossman Asare, says the Commission “will break for Christmas and New Year on Wednesday 23rd December, 2020 and resume duty on Tuesday 19th January, 2021. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been protesting in rejection of the 9th declaration by the EC, which claimed incumbent Akufo Addo won the presidential contest. The EC results declared has been fraught with arthmetic errors, which has subjected the Jean Mensa led EC into public ridicule and many have advised the NDC to go to court. However the EC statement intimates, that the decision to go on recess has been occasioned by the “successful and peaceful conduct of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. The decision to go for a month break has raised eyebrows over the EC's preparedness to address the issues being raised against its integrity and the credibility of the error-laden declaration. Meanwhile the NDC has announced all its 106 members of parliament will embark on protest march to the EC Office on Tuesday.
