Elikem Kotoko labels NPP leadership as party’s greatest weakness

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claiming its biggest failure lies in its current leadership.
In an appearance on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, 7 July 2025, Mr Kotoko accused the NPP’s top executives of lacking the courage and capability to lead the party effectively.
“One major problem that the NPP must cure is that their leadership is their major failure. From the national chairman, through the general secretary, to everyone, they are always afraid to say this,” he said.
Mr Kotoko claimed that rather than stepping aside after the party’s loss, key leaders are now attempting to maintain their grip on power in the lead-up to internal party elections. He argued that this approach undermines efforts to reposition the NPP as a credible political force.
“After failing them, they are trying some straws to hang on to seek reelection. If they really want to be seen as a serious party, they should get competent people to run for office,” he stated.
His comments come amid renewed scrutiny of the NPP’s internal structures following the Electoral Commission’s announcement of a rerun in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
The EC declared on 2 July that irregularities in 19 polling stations had compromised the validity of the results from the December 2024 general election.
According to the Commission, although scanned results from the affected stations were signed by party agents, they had not been properly verified by the Presiding Officers, violating electoral procedures.
The upcoming rerun has intensified political tensions, both within the NPP and in the public sphere, as questions mount over how the party will respond to mounting calls for internal reform.
While party officials have yet to formally respond to Mr Kotoko’s critique, the growing internal issues underscores the pressure facing the NPP’s leadership in the aftermath of its electoral defeat and ahead of key decisions on party reorganisation.
The date for the Ablekuma North rerun has not yet been announced, but the development is likely to be a focal point in upcoming political discussions, particularly as the party navigates calls for transparency and accountability.
