Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has high hopes for Mohammed Kudus, despite the young midfielder's omission from the African Player of the Year shortlist.
Kudus, who enjoyed a stellar first season at West Ham United, scored 14 goals and provided six assists across 45 appearances, playing a crucial role in the team's ninth-place finish in the English Premier League and their run to the Europa League quarter-finals.
After three successful years at Ajax, Kudus made a significant move to West Ham on a five-year deal for a reported fee of €44.5 million (£38 million), including performance-related add-ons.
This transfer made him the third Ghanaian to don the West Ham jersey, following John Paintsil and Andre Ayew.
Agyemang-Badu praised Kudus’ immediate impact at West Ham, expressing confidence in his potential to become one of Africa's football greats.
He stated, "That’s my star player! He’s incredibly talented and exudes confidence, which I really admire. At such a young age, he has the potential to develop into an even better player.”
Reflecting on Kudus' performance, Agyemang-Badu noted, “His transition from Ajax to West Ham was impressive; his first year was fantastic, and he performed exceptionally well.
He chose a club that wouldn't place excessive pressure on him and matched his level of play. I believe he made an excellent decision."
Despite Kudus' strong start to the season, he faced a setback with a red card in a match against Tottenham, which Agyemang-Badu believes is a learning experience.
“Mistakes are a natural part of football, and he just needs encouragement and support. I truly believe he will become one of the greatest players to emerge from Africa,” he said.
Agyemang-Badu concluded, "Being young, he will learn from this experience and improve. Gradually, we will see him progress and potentially join some of the greatest clubs in the world." His insights reflect a deep belief in Kudus' talent and potential, setting the stage for an exciting future in the sport.
