The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has completed major rural electrification projects in 13 communities within the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand equitable access to electricity across the country.
The communities which include Zomlampe, Nikpegu, Torope, Dokope, Kpatinyan, Darivogupe, Bagpe, Dawunipe, Diwurupe, Larigbani, Mammudupe, Sankaupe, and Nyinyape have been successfully connected to the national grid under the National Electrification Scheme (NES).
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, is scheduled to officially commission the projects on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at a ceremony expected to draw traditional leaders, local officials, and representatives from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) and the Central Gonja District Assembly.
In a statement ahead of the event, Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive energy development:
“Electricity is not just about lighting homes; it is about powering opportunity, driving enterprise, and transforming lives. Through projects like this, we are delivering on our promise to make energy the bedrock of Ghana’s green and inclusive development,” he said.
The Ministry highlighted the projects as part of a broader national agenda to transition to sustainable energy systems while ensuring that no community is left behind. The initiative is also expected to stimulate economic activity, improve access to education and healthcare, and enhance the overall quality of life in the newly connected areas.
The National Electrification Scheme remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s rural development strategy, targeting underserved communities across the country to bridge the urban-rural infrastructure gap and promote regional equity.
