After being put on hold thanks to the coronavirus pandemic gripping the continent last year, the much-anticipated European Championships are now just around the corner. There’s no doubt that fans of England and Scotland will already be counting down the days to their Group D match on June 18th, and there will certainly be a massive scramble for tickets to the game at Wembley Stadium when the allocations are revealed.

So, with just around one month to go until the old foes meet once again in London, let’s take a look at England vs Scotland in numbers. Read on to find out more!

114 – Having met each other a huge 114 times, England vs Scotland is the most played men’s international match in the world of football. It’ll come as no surprise that England have won the most games with 48 victories. However, Scotland aren’t that far behind with 41 — meaning the sides have drawn 25 times. The Three Lions, who will be the heavy favourites in the England vs Scotland betting odds, are also leading 203-174 on the goal front.

1872 – 1872 was when England and Scotland met for the first time. 4,000 people attended the match, which is recognised as the first ever international by FIFA, at the West of Scotland Cricket Ground in the Partick area of Glasgow on November 30th. However, unfortunately for the spectators, who paid a shilling for their tickets, the match ended 0-0.

1996 – Euro ‘96 was the first and still to this day only time England and Scotland have met at a major tournament. It was also Scotland’s last time featuring in a European Championships. Like this year, the sides met at Wembley in the second round of group fixtures. Alan Shearer gave England the lead in the 53rd minute before Paul Gascoigne scored one of his most famous goals to secure the 2-0 victory — David Seaman had denied Gary McAllister from the penalty spot just prior to Gazza’s goal.

2-2 – 2-2 was the scoreline when the sides last met back in June 2017. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had given England the lead with just 20 minutes to go at Glasgow’s Hampden Park. However, a quick-fire double from Leigh Griffiths late on looked to have secured the three points for the hosts in the World Cup qualifier. But Harry Kane spoiled Scotland’s celebrations, equalising in the 93rd minute.

18 – 18 is the amount of times England have beaten Scotland at Wembley. The sides have met 32 times at the London-based stadium, with Scotland racking up nine victories in that time. It may be best to avoid the draw if you’re planning on having a bet on the game, as a match between the two sides hasn’t finish level at the stadium in the last 15 games — 11 of which have been won by England. The last time the sides met in the English capital was in 2017 and it was a night to forget for those from north of the border as Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill scored in the 3-0 rout.

9-3 – Believe it or not, 9-3 is the largest margin of victory in the side’s 114 matches. The massive scoreline came in the 1960-61 British Home Championship, where Jimmy Greaves (3), Bobby Smith (2), Johnny Haynes (2), Bryan Douglas and Bobby Robson all scored for England at Wembley.
