The Ghana Medical and Dental council has urged government to expand the current medical schools in the country.

This according to the council is due to the widening doctor to patient ratio which they claim is alarming.

Ghana’s doctor to patient ratio currently stands at one doctor to four thousand patients which is woefully inadequate.

The medical council believes there is urgent need by the government to resolve the low number of doctors been trained in the country due to the lack of the needed facilities at the faculties of the various medical schools.

There is therefore the need to adopt measures to expand facilities so as to be able to train more doctors to cater for the escalating medical needs of the country.

Registrar of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, Dr Eli Atikpui says that there is the need to start expanding existing facilities at our medical schools.

“We have one doctor to four thousand population I think that there will be need for us to start to expand the facilities especially our lecturers what we call the faculties” he stressed.
