Abu Dhabi: Extra-time and penalties, as well as the potential use of one additional substitute, loom large for teams as they head into the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019's knockout phase.

With the Round of 16 fixtures due to get underway on Sunday, tournament regulations state: If no winner is determined at the end of 90 minutes, extra-time comprising two fifteen-minute periods shall be played at the end of normal playing time during the knockout stage.

The regulations go on to say, and in a first for the AFC Asian Cup, that one additional substitute may be used when a match goes into extra-time (whether or not the team has already used full number of permitted substitutes).

If no winner is determined at the end of extra-time, penalty kicks shall be taken in accordance with the Laws of the Game.

With no Round of 16 at the competition’s last edition in Australia, a penalty shootout was used to decide the winner in two quarter-final ties – from which Iraq and the United Arab Emirates progressed – while eventual runners-up Korea Republic overcame Uzbekistan in extra-time to reach the last four.
