Police in the Oti Region have apprehended a 36-year-old farmer in connection with the death of an 80-year-old woman in a suspected domestic-related attack.
The suspect, Chalim Madzaton, also known as Peter Tano, was arrested by the Kadjebi District Police Command during an intelligence-led operation at a hideout in Kpaya, a suburb of Ahamansu.
He is currently in custody over the killing of Dakolor Semaka, who was reportedly the mother of his girlfriend.
According to a police statement issued on March 25, 2026, the incident occurred a day earlier at Mangoase, near Kadjebi. Officers received information that the suspect had allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Yaa Tugbenyo, 55, along with her mother at their residence.
Police said Ms Tugbenyo managed to escape during the assault but later returned to find her mother unresponsive.
A team dispatched to the scene discovered the elderly woman lying on her back with visible injuries, suggesting a violent attack. The area was processed for evidence, with photographs taken to support ongoing investigations.
A medical officer at St Mary Theresa Hospital confirmed the victim’s death. Her body has since been deposited at the facility’s morgue pending autopsy.
The suspect remains in custody and is assisting police with investigations. Authorities say he will be arraigned before court in due course.
The statement was signed by DSP John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit of the Oti Regional Police Command.
