An Obuasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 34-year-old farmer, Afrifa Adu Kofi, to eight years imprisonment with hard labour after he admitted participating in a violent attack that left three people injured at a mining site in Adansi Odumasi.

The court also imposed an additional three-year sentence for unlawful possession of a pump-action gun. However, both sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve the longer eight-year term.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 31, 2026, when the convict and several accomplices, who remain at large, allegedly stormed a mining concession armed with cutlasses, sticks and a firearm.

During the attack, four workers — Mohammed Abdulai, Halidu Seidu, Nasaratu Fuseini and Stephen Otoo — were assaulted and sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The victims were rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital for treatment, while Halidu Seidu was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his condition.

Investigations revealed that Afrifa Adu Kofi was charged with four counts of causing harm and one count of possessing a firearm without lawful authority.

Appearing before the court presided over by Mr. Issac Appiatu, the accused pleaded guilty and was convicted on three counts relating to injuries caused to Mohammed Abdulai, Halidu Seidu and Nasaratu Fuseini. He was, however, acquitted on the count involving Stephen Otoo.

The court also found him guilty of illegally possessing the pump-action gun after he failed to provide any valid licence or documentation covering the weapon.

In a statement to investigators, the convict admitted attacking the victims with a cutlass and further confessed to shooting Mohammed Abdulai during the confrontation.

Following his conviction, the court handed him a 96-month prison term on each of the three counts of causing harm and 36 months for the firearms offence, ordering that all sentences run at the same time.

Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to track down the remaining suspects who allegedly took part in the attack and are continuing investigations into the case.
