The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has ordered the immediate recall of Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink after laboratory tests revealed that the beverage had been adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate—a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

In a statement issued on November 5, 2025, the FDA explained that the product, manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited, was registered strictly as a food item and therefore should not contain any pharmaceutical substances.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) wishes to inform the public that laboratory analysis conducted on Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink, manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited, has revealed that the product has been adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate, a Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which is an undeclared drug substance,” the statement read.

The Authority cautioned that consuming Sildenafil without medical supervision could pose serious health risks. It noted that the drug can dangerously interact with certain medications, such as nitroglycerin, potentially causing a severe drop in blood pressure that could lead to heart attack or stroke.

“The presence of Sildenafil in a food product poses serious health and safety risks, particularly because it is undeclared,” the statement added.

The FDA said it is working with 1 Africa Industries Limited to recall all affected products from the market for safe disposal. It further warned that adulterating food products with undeclared drugs violates Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and constitutes a criminal offence.

“The FDA is collaborating with 1 Africa Industries Limited to remove the affected products from circulation, while appropriate regulatory actions are being taken,” the Authority stated.

The FDA has urged consumers, retailers, and distributors to comply with the recall directive and report anyone found selling the product.

“The Authority advises the public to cooperate with the recall exercise and immediately report persons offering Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink for sale to the nearest FDA office to ensure its complete removal from trade,” the statement concluded.
