International advocacy group FairSquare has formally asked FIFA’s Ethics Committee to investigate President Gianni Infantino over alleged breaches of political neutrality and the controversial decision to award U.S. President Donald Trump the first FIFA Peace Prize.

FairSquare, known for scrutinizing labour migration, governance failures, and political repression, submitted an eight-page complaint to FIFA’s Ethics Committee and communications department, reviewed by The Athletic.

FIFA’s Judicial Framework

  • Ethics Committee: Enforces the FIFA Code of Ethics.

  • Investigatory Chamber: Chaired by Rwandan diplomat Martin Ngoga, with members from nine countries.

  • Sanctions: Range from warnings and fines to bans from football activity.
Allegations Against Infantino

FairSquare outlined four alleged violations, all tied to public actions supportive of Trump:

  1. Nobel Peace Prize Endorsement – Infantino publicly called for Trump to receive the award, citing his role in an Israel–Gaza ceasefire.

  2. Miami Business Forum Appearance – Praised Trump’s presidency and encouraged support for his agenda.

  3. World Cup Draw in Washington – Lauded Trump’s leadership while presenting the FIFA Peace Prize.

  4. January Video – Thanked Trump for inviting him to a political rally, using campaign-style language.

FairSquare argues these remarks breach Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires political neutrality from all FIFA officials.

Controversy Over FIFA Peace Prize

  • Procedural Concerns: FairSquare says the Peace Prize’s creation bypassed FIFA Council approval, which sets strategic direction.

  • Transparency Issues: The Athletic reported that neither the Council nor vice presidents knew of the award or its criteria.

  • Human Rights Watch Letter: Previously raised similar concerns, noting no nominees, criteria, or judges were disclosed.

  • FIFA Response: None provided.

  • Trump’s Reaction: Described receiving the award as “one of the greatest honours of his life.”
Implications

This case raises serious governance questions about FIFA’s adherence to its own ethics code and decision-making transparency. If the Ethics Committee proceeds, Infantino could face sanctions ranging from warnings to suspension, depending on findings.
