A final-year Computer Science student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to death by the Tamale High Court for the murder of fellow student Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.

The tragic incident, which occurred in September 2024, was rooted in a love triangle involving Nurudeen, his ex-girlfriend, and the deceased.

Investigations revealed that the woman at the centre of the dispute had ended her relationship with Nurudeen and begun dating Wumpini.

On September 25, Wumpini’s lifeless body was discovered with multiple stab wounds. His phone was also reported missing.

Subsequent investigations by the police cybercrime unit led to a major breakthrough.

Wumpini (deceased)

The victim’s phone was traced to Nurudeen’s residence and discovered hidden under his bed.

Further digital evidence revealed that Nurudeen had used Wumpini’s phone to send deceptive text messages — one to the ex-girlfriend pretending to end the relationship, and another to one of Wumpini’s friends.

Convicted murderer

Nurudeen was arrested after being lured to the Jubilee Park in Tamale as part of a police operation. While he admitted to sending the messages, he denied any involvement in the murder.

However, the Tamale High Court found the evidence against him overwhelming and on Thursday, July 25, 2025, convicted him of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging, as prescribed by Ghanaian law for such offences.

The case has sent shockwaves through the university community and sparked renewed conversations about campus relationships.
