Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has called on staff of the Osu Tax Service Centre to intensify efforts in domestic revenue mobilisation, highlighting the need to strengthen compliance and improve collection rather than relying on tax increases.
During a working visit to the Centre on Monday, Dr. Forson noted that while the government has made progress in expenditure control and the Bank of Ghana continues to perform strongly, revenue generation must now “rise to the challenge.”
Addressing staff, he emphasised that his visit was meant to encourage, not interfere with, their work. “I will not obstruct revenue collection, no matter whose ox is gored,” he said.
The Finance Minister stressed that improving compliance is more sustainable than constantly raising taxes. “It pains me when we resort to higher taxes instead of widening compliance and improving collection. We cannot keep piling taxes on already burdened taxpayers,” he stated.
Dr. Forson announced that new electronic tools will be deployed next year to enhance efficiency in revenue administration. To further incentivise staff, he pledged to approve all bonuses due, provided performance targets are met. “Together, we can build a fairer, stronger, and more sustainable revenue system for Ghana,” he added.
Dr. Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, Acting Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division, welcomed the Minister and described the visit as timely and motivating. The Chairman of the GRA Workers Union, Theophilus Ehun, also assured Dr. Forson of the staff’s commitment to achieving the set targets.
The visit forms part of the Finance Minister’s renewed drive to modernise tax administration, strengthen compliance, and reduce Ghana’s reliance on tax increases by promoting efficiency and fairness in revenue collection.
