Fire tore through parts of Madina Market in Accra early on Friday, September 19, 2025, destroying several shops and wooden structures, and causing significant damage before it was brought under control.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around 1:00 a.m., sending thick smoke into the night sky and drawing concerned traders and residents to the scene. Many helplessly watched as their businesses were consumed by the flames before firefighters arrived.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed receiving an emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Fire crews were on-site within two minutes, but due to the intensity of the blaze and the lack of nearby hydrants, four additional fire engines were dispatched.

“The fire affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers,” the GNFS noted in a statement. “It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m.”

While the damage was significant, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from reaching a nearby one-story warehouse and surrounding buildings. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are currently underway.
