A fire outbreak has ravaged part of the girls’ dormitory at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region, destroying two rooms entirely and leaving another partially damaged, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, Baba Hudu, confirmed the incident, explaining that the origin of the blaze is still under investigation as officers prepare to engage school authorities for further details.
A student who witnessed the incident said the situation unfolded suddenly while students were getting ready for lessons, recalling that smoke was first noticed billowing from the roof before flames quickly spread through sections of the dormitory.
Firefighters arrived swiftly and managed to bring the inferno under control, preventing it from engulfing the entire building. No official statement has yet been issued by school management.
This latest incident marks the second time the girls’ dormitory at Tolon SHS has been affected by fire, following a similar occurrence in 2022.
It also adds to growing concerns about dormitory fires in the Northern Region. Only last week, a major blaze at the Northern School of Business (Nobisco) destroyed the girls’ dormitory there, forcing about 900 students out of their accommodation as authorities work on arrangements for their return to school.
The Fire Service has begun investigations into the Tolon SHS incident, with the exact cause yet to be determined.
