Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has advised Baba Rahman to consider stepping away from the Black Stars, citing the relentless criticism the defender has faced throughout his national team career.

Johnson believes the PAOK defender has endured enough negativity from fans and should focus on his club performances instead.

“If I were Baba Rahman, I wouldn’t return to the Black Stars,” Johnson said during an interview with Pan-Africa Football. “He has faced heavy criticism, and even when he plays well, people are quick to judge him harshly. He doesn’t need to prove himself anymore.”

Rahman has been in exceptional form for PAOK in Greece, scoring three goals in 10 league appearances this season and adding two more in the Europa League. His impressive performances have sparked calls for his return to the national team, but Johnson insists the former Chelsea left-back should prioritize his mental well-being and club career.

“He has given his best to the national team, but the backlash he receives outweighs the appreciation. If I were him, I would focus on my career at PAOK and leave the criticisms behind,” Johnson added.

Baba Rahman, who has been instrumental for his club this season, has not played for the Black Stars since withdrawing from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad earlier this year.

Whether he heeds Johnson’s advice remains to be seen, but the defender's contributions to Ghana’s football legacy remain undeniable.
