Former Ghana international Sarfo Gyamfi has attributed the mass departure of players from the domestic scene to the persistent exclusion of home-based footballers from the Black Stars.
Speaking to Kessben FM, the ex-Asante Kotoko star argued that the lack of national team recognition has left local players demotivated, pushing them to seek opportunities abroad.
Gyamfi’s Concerns
“Players in the local scene are not motivated enough to stay. The players prefer to play outside Ghana because of the persistent Black Stars snub. They believe playing abroad or outside Ghana can only earn them call up into the national team.”
He recalled that in previous years, home-based players formed the backbone of the national team:
“Kotoko had 12 players in the Black Stars during our playing days, but the narrative has changed.”
Current Situation
- Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak goalkeeper) remains the only consistent home-based player in the Black Stars setup.
- The exodus of talent has weakened the Ghana Premier League and other domestic competitions.
- Many standout performers in the local league now move to clubs elsewhere in Africa or Europe for better opportunities.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico approaching, a section of Ghanaian football fans have called for greater inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars squad. They argue that such recognition would not only motivate players to remain in the domestic league but also strengthen its competitiveness.
