Edward Agyekum Kufuor, son of former president Kufuor, has pulled out of the race to become the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon.

His decision comes barely three days to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries scheduled for Saturday, December 29, 2018.

This comes after he had successfully passed the vetting by officials of the party, and was announced by NPP’s secretary for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Alhaji Issa Sawadogo.

Even though he was tipped to win the primaries on account of his father’s goodwill, Edward Agyekum Kufuor did not give reasons for his decision, except to say it is for personal reasons.

It has however been suggested that it is because he is not known by the delegates, as he isn’t considered as known as the grassroots.

Five NPP people are therefore left to vie for the vacant seat in parliament previously occupied by the late Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, who passed away in November 2018.

They are deputy national communications director of the party, Maame Yaa Aboagye, Victoria Esinam Ansah Offei, Samuel Amankwah and Lydia Alhassan, a widow of the late MP for the area.

The Electoral Commission has set Thursday, January 31, 2019, as the date for the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency by-election.

The date was agreed upon at an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Monday, December 24, 2018.
