Samsung is planning to go big in the smartphone camera industry as it is rumoured to be acquiring a company that is responsible for developing 10x optical zoom tech. As reported by Phonearena, the South Korean tech firm is in ‘advanced talks’ with an Israeli company called Corephotonics for $150-$160 million.
The firm reportedly has over 150 zoom-related patents for smartphone cameras. It is also said to have worked alongside Oppo for the 10x lossless zoom tech, which was showcased few days ago in China. The firm might also showcase this tech at the upcoming MWC 2019 conference at Barcelona, Spain. Oppo has already set a keynote event for February 23.

If Samsung acquires Corephotonics, it can not only use the 10x lossless zoom in its own Galaxy smartphone but can also use the firm’s “multi-frame technologies, image fusion and multi-scaling tech” to deliver a total of 25x zoom, which can be an appealing selling point for the handset.

Samsung, in 2018, also became the first in the market to bring ‘variable aperture’ rear camera tech in smartphones. The Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9 smartphones have already received it. However, for now, one can only expect improvements in the variable aperture camera tech with the upcoming ‘Samsung Galaxy S10’ smartphones.

The handset maker few days ago sent invites for its Galaxy Unpacked event 2019. The company has scheduled the event for February 20 in San Francisco, where it will unveil its flagship Galaxy S10 series of smartphones. As always the company will be launching the devices before the beginning of MWC 2019, which will kickstart from February 25.

In addition to this, Samsung is also expected to launch its much-awaited foldable phone this year. It may not launch alongside the Galaxy S10 smartphones though. Also, Galaxy S10 handsets could be the company’s first to support 5G connectivity.
