The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Amin Alhassan, has publicly refuted claims made by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, that the national broadcaster received over $3 million for its coverage of the 2023 African Games.
In an interview with Uniq FM, Prof. Alhassan clarified that GBC was actually paid only $105,000 for its broadcasting services during the Games, which took place from February to March 2024.
He emphasized that this payment was utilized to cover the expenses related to suspending regular programming to accommodate the Games' coverage.
"I want to clarify that GBC’s total benefit from the African Games was $105,000. No additional funds were paid to GBC," Prof. Alhassan stated. He further explained that GBC's involvement in the event's coverage began only about a month before the Games started.
This statement directly contradicts the earlier remarks made by Minister Ussif during a session with the Public Accounts Committee on August 19, 2024.
The Minister had asserted that GBC, as the official broadcaster for the 13th All African Games, had been fully compensated, with the payment exceeding $3 million.
The discrepancy between the figures mentioned by the Sports Minister and the GBC Director General has sparked controversy, leading to widespread concern and debate on social media regarding the actual amount paid to GBC.
