Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has voiced his support for beleaguered coach Otto Addo, despite the Black Stars’ challenging campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana finds itself on the verge of missing the AFCON for the first time since 2004, having recorded four consecutive games without a victory, which has intensified calls for Addo’s dismissal.

However, Afriyie remains optimistic, advocating for patience and continued support for the coach.

Currently, the Black Stars sit third in Group F, with only two points from four matches. Afriyie, reflecting on Addo’s previous successes in World Cup qualifiers—including crucial wins against Mali and the Central African Republic—stated, “I am not one of those who will say we have to sack Otto.

We have to keep faith with him and make sure that he continues the process he has started because remember we still have the World Cup qualifiers.”

He emphasized the need to provide the coach with the necessary backing: “Going forward in this AFCON [qualifiers], let's accept that we are out and allow Otto to take his decisions and learn on the job and then we move forward.”

Ghana's path to AFCON qualification now hinges on securing victories against Angola and Niger in their upcoming matches while hoping that second-placed Sudan falters in their remaining games.

Angola has already qualified with 12 points, leaving Niger at the bottom of the group with just one point.
