Gerald Asamoah, the former Germany international and Black Stars-born footballer, has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Accra, in recognition of his humanitarian work and efforts to strengthen ties between Germany and Ghana.
The 47-year-old Schalke icon, who accompanied Steinmeier on his Africa tour, was hailed as a “bridge builder” whose legacy transcends football.
“The foundation regularly sends German medical personnel to Ghana… they save children’s lives,” Steinmeier said, praising Asamoah’s work through the Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease, founded in 2007.
From Heart Condition to Heartfelt Mission
Born in Ghana and raised in Germany from age 12, Asamoah overcame a personal heart condition to forge a successful football career, representing:
- Hannover 96
- FC Schalke 04
- Germany’s 2002 World Cup squad (runners-up)
His foundation focuses on pediatric heart care in Ghana, while his advocacy for inclusion and anti-racism includes work with the “School Without Racism” initiative.
An emotional Asamoah reacted with humility:
“That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it… it’s simply pride that the work I do is paying off.”
The moment, marked by laughter as he nervously dropped his certificate, captured the human warmth and sincerity that define his legacy.
