The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced ongoing efforts to resolve concerns raised by newly posted teachers who picketed on Monday, June 23, over delays in salary payments and staff ID issuance.
In a statement, the GES said the Ministry of Education has requested an extension of expired financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance. This extension will allow for the processing of nearly ten months' salary arrears and the issuance of staff IDs to the affected teachers.
The unpaid teachers—who assumed duty in September 2024—are part of the 12,807 graduates recruited that year. According to GES, 2,113 teachers have not received salaries despite being issued staff IDs, while another 582 were not issued IDs due to inconsistencies involving Ghana Card details, SSNIT numbers, or self-reposting.
To facilitate resolution, GES has formed a technical committee including representatives of the affected teachers. The committee is expected to improve communication and coordination throughout the process.
The issues surfaced following a nationwide staff validation exercise in March 2025, which revealed anomalies in the recruitment process.
GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, called for calm, assuring the teachers of the Service’s commitment to resolving the matter.
“Significant progress has already been made,” the statement said, noting that provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to support payments.
GES also acknowledged challenges in stakeholder engagement, citing leadership changes among teacher groups. The Service is urging unified representation to help streamline communication and expedite resolution.
