The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reportedly parted ways with former international defender John Paintsil as part of a wider overhaul of the Black Stars’ technical team.
Paintsil, who previously played in the Premier League for clubs including West Ham Unitedand Fulham, had been serving as the team’s high-performance coach. He was brought into the setup following the reappointment of head coach Otto Addo in March 2024, having earlier worked as his assistant.
His departure follows Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a disappointment that triggered a comprehensive review of the national team’s structure.
The reshuffle has been ongoing in recent months, with figures such as Desmond Ofei, Alain Ravera and Kim Lars Björkegren all involved at different stages as part of efforts to strengthen the technical bench.
The latest move comes shortly after the dismissal of Otto Addo and technical advisor Winfried Schäfer, following consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international break.
In what appears to be a significant reset ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the GFA has appointed experienced manager Carlos Queiroz on a short-term four-month contract. His tenure will be reviewed after the tournament.
Queiroz, who has previously managed Portugal, Iran and Egypt, is expected to assemble his own technical team and begin work next month.
Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June, before facing England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
The new coach takes charge of a side seeking renewed direction and stronger performances on football’s biggest stage, following early exits in both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
