Ghana's Black Satellites played out an exciting 2-2 draw against Benin in their opening Group A match at the 2024 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship, held at the Stade de Kégué.
Coach Desmond Ofei fielded a strong team, including key players like Jerry Afriyie, Misbau Aziz, Mohaison Mahmoud, Benjamin Twum, and captain Edwin Kuffour Asamoah.
However, the Black Satellites struggled to get going in the early stages of the game.
Despite the slow start, Ghana took the lead in the 13th minute when Jerry Afriyie found the back of the net with a close-range finish after a well-executed team move.
Benin responded quickly, equalizing 12 minutes later through Derrick Djokoui, whose weak header slipped past Ghana goalkeeper Saeed Yakubu.
Benin then took control of the game just before halftime, with Gabriel Moulero capitalizing on a defensive error to chip in a beautiful goal, catching Yakubu off his line and giving the Young Squirrels a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, the Black Satellites pressed hard for an equalizer, dominating possession but struggling to break down Benin's solid defense. With time running out, it seemed as though Benin would hold on for the win.
However, in stoppage time, Ghana was awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Jerry Afriyie calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Kenzo Guezo the wrong way and securing a dramatic 2-2 draw.
In the other Group A match, hosts Togo also played out a 2-2 draw with Niger in an equally thrilling tournament opener.
The Black Satellites will now face Niger in their second group game on Sunday, October 20, at the same venue.
