The Government of Ghana has commenced the urgent evacuation of its nationals from Iran in response to growing hostilities between Iran and Israel. This was confirmed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a statement released on Facebook on Monday, June 16, 2025.

Minister Ablakwa explained that the decision reflects the Mahama administration’s commitment to the safety of Ghanaians living abroad, especially in high-risk regions.

“In view of the worsening conflict between Israel and Iran, the government has resolved to immediately evacuate all Ghanaian citizens residing in Iran to ensure their safety,” he said.

As part of this emergency measure, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect. The evacuation, which is being carried out through Iran’s land borders, includes all categories of Ghanaian nationals—diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.

Regarding the situation in Israel, Mr. Ablakwa noted that the government continues to monitor developments carefully. In the meantime, operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv have been reduced to only the most essential functions.

“All Ghanaian citizens in Israel are encouraged to stay in regular contact with the consular section,” he advised.

The Minister reassured the public that the government is committed to doing everything necessary to protect Ghanaians in affected regions.

“We will spare no effort in ensuring the safety of our citizens and keeping them out of danger,” he emphasized.

The government also renewed its call for peace, urging both Iran and Israel to embrace dialogue and diplomacy.

“Ghana once again appeals to both sides to end hostilities and pursue peaceful negotiations to resolve their differences,” the Minister concluded.
