Ghana has taken a major step to strengthen its air capabilities after the Ministry of Defence signed a strategic agreement with Airbus Helicopters for the acquisition of four advanced aircraft, marking the manufacturer’s official return to the country after several years.
The agreement, announced on Wednesday, January 15, 2026, covers the supply of two H175M multi-mission helicopters, as well as one ACH175 and one ACH160, which will be used primarily for transport operations.
Airbus Helicopters says the deal will significantly enhance Ghana’s capacity across defence, security, emergency response and civilian transport, supporting both military and national development objectives.
Under the arrangement, the H175M helicopters will serve as versatile platforms capable of handling a wide range of missions, including troop and personnel transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services, and disaster relief.
The ACH175 and ACH160, meanwhile, will be dedicated mainly to high-end transport duties.
Speaking on the agreement, Arnaud Montalvo, Head of Africa and the Middle East Region for Airbus Helicopters, described the deal as a turning point in the company’s relationship with Ghana.
“This commitment from Ghana marks the return of Airbus Helicopters to the country with a clear focus on long-term partnership and customer support,” he said.
“We are especially proud that the H175M will be operated in Ghana, showcasing its versatility in defence and security missions. This agreement also positions Ghana as a leading West African customer for our premium corporate helicopters, the ACH160 and ACH175.”
The H175, which entered service in 2014, belongs to Airbus’ super-medium helicopter class and is designed to combine long-range performance with strong payload capacity.
Known for its smooth flight characteristics, the aircraft is suited for a broad range of missions, including public services, disaster response, offshore and onshore operations, and military and business aviation roles.
The ACH160, on the other hand, represents Airbus’ most advanced helicopter to date.
The aircraft incorporates 68 patented Airbus innovations and is widely regarded as the most technologically sophisticated helicopter currently in operation.
It also offers enhanced passenger comfort, providing 20% more cabin space per passenger than previous-generation medium twin helicopters, along with significantly larger windows that create the brightest cabin in its class.
The acquisition is expected to boost Ghana’s operational readiness in security and emergency situations, while also reinforcing the country’s position as a key aviation and defence partner for Airbus in the West African sub-region.
