Ghana has formally secured the right to host the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).
The agreement, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adam, confirms that the continental championships will take place from 12 to 17 May 2026 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in Accra, brought together senior officials from across African athletics and Ghana’s sporting institutions. The CAA delegation was led by its President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, alongside the organisation’s chief executive, Lamine Fati. Also present was a delegation from CAA Region Two, headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa.
Ghana Athletics was represented by its president, Bawah Fuseini, with additional attendance from the Ghana Olympic Committee, led by Richard Akakpovie, and the National Sports Authority, represented by its deputy director general (technical), Victoria Commey.
The MoU formally confirms Ghana’s acceptance of the hosting rights and sets out the framework for collaboration between the CAA, Ghana Athletics and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as preparations begin for the 2026 championships.
Earlier in the day, officials from the CAA and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy visits to the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate, as part of broader consultations and planning for the event.
The championships are expected to attract some of Africa’s leading athletes, with organisers hopeful the event will further cement Ghana’s reputation as a reliable host for major international sporting competitions.
