Legal practitioner and political analyst, Amanda Akuokor Clinton, has blamed Ghana’s persistent flooding on poor urban planning and weak enforcement of regulations, rather than natural causes.
Speaking on on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, May 24, Ms. Clinton said, “We don’t have a flooding problem in Ghana. What we have is a planning and enforcement problem.”
She criticised successive governments for failing to implement long-term solutions, citing a lack of political will and poor institutional coordination as key reasons why flooding continues to devastate communities year after year.
Her comments come in the wake of the National Disaster Management Organisation’s (NADMO) confirmation that five people lost their lives during recent floods in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.
NADMO attributed the deaths to poor drainage systems and the unchecked construction of buildings in waterways.
According to NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, three of the fatalities occurred in Ga East Municipality, while two were recorded in Adenta.
The legal practitioner said the tragedy highlights the urgent need for a shift from reactive disaster management to proactive urban planning and enforcement.
