Ghana holds state funeral today for helicopter crash victims

Ghana will today, August 15, 2025, hold a solemn state funeral to honour the eight individuals who died in the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6 at Sikaman-Brofroyedru in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The ceremony, taking place at Black Star Square in Accra, will be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, government officials, members of the security services, traditional authorities, and families of the deceased.
An interdenominational service will be held in memory of all eight victims.
Following the service, six of the deceased Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah at the Military Cemetery at Tse Addo.
Two other victims, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, were buried on August 10 in line with Islamic rites.
The crash, which occurred during official duty, has prompted renewed calls for urgent investment in Ghana’s military aviation capabilities.
Security is expected to be tight at today’s event, with several key roads in Accra closed to traffic to allow for a smooth funeral procession and to ensure public safety.
