Ghana hosts inaugural WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup

Preparations are in full swing for the maiden WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup, set to kick off on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) held a crucial meeting with WAFU B Executive Director Phillipe Tchere and other officials on Wednesday to finalize preparations and align expectations for the tournament.
Preparatory Meeting at Ghanaman Centre of Excellence
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including:
- Deputy General Secretary, Ama Brobey Williams
- Maxwell Caeser Kemeh (Competitions Department)
- Winnifred Mawudeku (Technical Center Director)
- John Ansah (Safety and Security Committee)
WAFU B’s all-female officiating team, comprising Coordinators, Match Commissioners, Referee Assessors, Digital and Media Officers, and Safe-Guarding officials, also participated.
Deputy General Secretary Ama Brobey Williams reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to delivering a memorable and successful event.
Phillipe Tchere echoed the importance of the tournament in unearthing young talent while advancing the vision of WAFU B President Kurt Okraku for inclusivity, creativity, and excellence.
Teams and Tournament Objectives
Five countries are participating in the tournament:
- Hosts Ghana
- Nigeria
- Côte d'Ivoire
- Niger
- Benin
The event aims to promote youth development, provide a competitive platform for young female players, and prepare teams for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Technical Center Director Winnifred Mawudeku assured that all teams would be well accommodated during the tournament.
Opening Match: Ghana vs. Benin
Ghana's Black Maidens will launch their campaign with an opening game against Benin on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 15:00 GMT (3:00 PM local time) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
This inaugural tournament promises to showcase emerging talent in women's football across the WAFU B region, setting the stage for future growth and competition.
