Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has lauded Ghana's support in ensuring the peaceful transition in the Liberian elections.

Madam Sirleaf John who is preparing to hand over to Former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah, took office in 2006 after her predecessor, Charles Taylor was forced out of power.

Africa's first elected female president who spoke to a gathering in Accra yesterday December 28 reiterated her readiness to peacefully handover to her successor.

She said, “I will be leaving the presidency and respecting the constitution of our country,”

“We’ve been able to demonstrate that indeed a woman can lead [and] I want to thank all the women in Ghana. Ghana has been a motivating force,” she said, thanking Ghana for peaceful efforts in the country founded by US slaves.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's 12-year rule ended after a peace election which was held saw Former Ballon D'or winner, George Weah elected to the highest office of the land.

The National Electoral commission of Liberia yesterday declared George Weah as winner of the  presidential run-off election after scoring 61.5 percent of the vote based on 98.1 percent of ballots cast.

This will be the country's first democratic transition since 1944.
