The Government of Ghana has announced a new expedited visa policy that will see applications processed within five working days, significantly cutting down from the previous 4 to 6-weeks timeline.
The policy, which takes immediate effect, was unveiled by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as part of efforts to reposition Ghana as a top destination for tourism, investment, and business in Africa.
“We have put in place adequate measures at our diplomatic missions to drastically cut down visa processing time,” the Ministry stated in a Facebook post.
According to the Minister, systems have already been deployed at Ghana’s embassies and consulates around the world to support the smooth and efficient rollout of the policy.
The move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s inaugural declaration on January 7, 2025, that “Ghana is open for business.”
Mr. Ablakwa said the new visa regime reflects the government’s commitment to that vision by eliminating bureaucratic delays that have long hindered travelers and potential investors.
“As Foreign Minister, I am committed to positioning Ghana as the preferred destination for investors and tourists by making the country more competitive and eliminating red tape,” he affirmed.
However, the Ministry clarified that the five-day window does not guarantee visa approval, but rather ensures that applicants receive a decision within that timeframe.
The expedited visa process is expected to boost tourism, attract foreign direct investment, and facilitate closer ties with the Ghanaian diaspora.
“Ghana is truly open for business. Come enjoy the Black Star experience,”he said.
