President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the country is making steady progress in recovering from the economic and social challenges it faced a year ago, stating that Ghana is on a path of renewal following a year of reforms and careful economic management.

In his New Year’s address to the nation on January 1, 2026, the President said his administration assumed office at a time when the country was grappling with severe difficulties, including a weak economy, high unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, declining public confidence and widespread loss of hope.

He said although some had predicted that recovery would take decades, his government remained confident in the resilience of Ghanaians and moved swiftly to reverse the downturn. According to President Mahama, measurable progress has been recorded over the past 12 months, particularly in stabilising the economy.

He noted that inflation, which stood above 23 per cent at the end of 2024, has fallen sharply and is projected to reach a single-digit rate of about five per cent by the close of 2025. The President added that relative currency stability has been restored, placing Ghana on track to rank among the best-performing currencies globally in 2025.

President Mahama said economic growth is gaining momentum, creating employment opportunities for young people and rebuilding confidence within the business community. He also pointed to rising domestic and foreign direct investment as a sign of renewed trust in the economy and improved relations with international partners.

According to him, government has successfully renegotiated Ghana’s debt in a manner that protects national sovereignty while ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability. He further disclosed that the country has begun steps to exit the International Monetary Fund programme, stressing that Ghana is doing so as an equal partner and not from a position of dependency.

The President urged citizens to remain hopeful and united as the country continues its recovery and growth efforts in the year ahead.
