Ghana has the second-highest number of persons globally suffering from glaucoma, that’s according to the Ghana Glaucoma Association.

According to the Association, about 700,000 out of 24 million Ghanaians have glaucoma.

The figure was revealed at a free eye screening exercise at Amasaman in Accra over the weekend organized by Accra Phoenix and Accra Metro Lion clubs subsidiary clubs of the International Association of Lion Clubs and Brekusu Ashesi Leo Club.

The President of the Accra Phoenix Club branch Anthony Hugh Kobina in an interview with Joy News said glaucoma now has a widespread presence and it needs to be seriously addressed.

“We decided to keep the focus on glaucoma because of the prevalence now, it is the third leading eye disorder.”

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision.

This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.
