The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has refuted reports circulating in international media that the United States intends to deport Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.

On Friday, October 10, 2025, several global outlets reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had notified Garcia’s legal team of plans to deport him to Ghana, following earlier considerations to send him to Eswatini or Uganda after a botched deportation to El Salvador.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Ablakwa categorically denied the claim, stressing that Ghana has not consented to and will not receive Abrego Garcia under any arrangement.

He explained that Ghana’s existing agreement with the United States covers only the acceptance of non-criminal West African nationals under strictly humanitarian and solidarity principles, and does not extend to nationals from other regions.

“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

The minister further emphasized that Ghana’s position has been clearly communicated to U.S. authorities, describing the media reports as “misleading and inaccurate.”
“Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports,” he added, reaffirming the country’s commitment to uphold its diplomatic integrity and ensure that all international cooperation aligns with established protocols and national interest.
