Siemens, in collaboration with Rotan Power have penned a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve and build a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of about 660 megawatts (MW).

This agreement took place at the Aboadze Power Enclave in the Western Region.

The agreement took place in the presence of the vice president, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia ande Brigitte Zypries,  the Federal Minister of Economics and Energy, Boakye Agyarko, the Energy Minister of Ghana as well as the Minister for Finance Ken Ofori Atta.

The plant is expected to be the most efficient and environmentally friewndly thermal plants, providing new standards in ths sub Saharan Africa.

The plant will be constructwed in two phases with a commercial operations date of the initial phase slated for 2023 with a second phase in 2025. The total investment volume stands at an amount over $500 million. The German Export Credit Agency and Euler Hermes are expected to provide financing for the project, aimed at being the largest plant in the country.

Sabine Dall’Omo, the CEO has stated that: “This project underlines the strategic partnership between Germany and Ghana and underpins the engagement of Siemens as leading global technology company in Africa. Together we will provide electricity to more than five million Ghanaians unlocking the economic potential by using power as a catalyst for socio-economic development.”

Mr. Kofi Morna, who is also the Chairman of Rotan Power also commented saying “Rotan is delighted to partner with Siemens in deploying the first F-Class turbine in sub Saharan Africa with the lowest generation cost among thermal power producers in Ghana. Together with Siemens we will power the country and further improve access to electricity for our population. Furthermore the partnership will enable us to leverage skills transfer and training for Ghanaians.”

Siemens holds the responsibility for the entire EPC turnkey scope. In addition Siemens - will provide Operation and Maintenance for 20 years.​
