Promising Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo will be sidelined for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the remainder of the season due to a significant injury he sustained during a recent match.

The 23-year-old forward suffered the injury while making a cameo appearance for Bournemouth in their Premier League encounter against Chelsea, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for his team.

Semenyo, who joined Bournemouth during the winter transfer window after an impressive stint with Bristol City, had made 11 appearances for his new club and even managed to score his debut goal in a commanding 4-1 victory over Leeds United. However, his promising season has now been cut short due to this unfortunate setback.

Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil shared the disappointing news during a pre-match interview, expressing his sympathy for Semenyo's injury.

O'Neil stated, "Antoine [Semenyo] has undergone surgery, and he will be out until next season. We're hopeful that he recovers quickly and can have a productive spell with the team before the start of the new season. The success of his recovery will determine when he can rejoin the squad. The surgery went well, and we wish him a speedy recovery because he can play a crucial role for us in the upcoming season."

Semenyo's decision to switch nationalities and represent Ghana last year means he did not start the AFCON qualifiers.

However, he made an immediate impact by scoring the vital winning goal in Ghana's narrow 1-0 triumph over Angola in Kumasi last month.

Ghana will conclude the qualifiers by facing Madagascar and the Central African Republic, with the goal of finishing as winners of Group E.

The Black Stars need just one point from their remaining matches to secure qualification for the tournament held in Ivory Coast.

However, they will have to navigate these crucial fixtures without the services of Semenyo, dealing a blow to the team's attacking prowess.
