Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed that the $9 million prize Ghana’s Black Stars will receive for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be deposited into the country’s newly established Sports Fund.

FIFA’s Financial Package

  • Under the expanded 48-team format, every qualifying nation receives:

    • $9 million – group-stage participation prize money.

    • $1.5 million – preparation expenses.

  • Ghana’s total guaranteed earnings: $10.5 million.

Minister’s Clarification

Adams explained that tournament revenues were a key driver behind the creation of the fund:

“One source is earnings from tournaments. For instance, FIFA will award us $9 million, while the $1.5 million is allocated for preparation. Unless there are unavoidable costs, the $9 million will go directly into the fund.”

Purpose of the Sports Fund

  • Structured utilisation of revenues.

  • Sustainable investment in sports infrastructure and facilities.

  • Ensuring Ghana’s World Cup participation leaves a tangible legacy.

  • First-time opportunity to directly link World Cup earnings to national development projects.

Potential Returns From Progression

  • Round of 32: +$3 million.

  • Round of 16: +$4 million.

  • Further advancement brings greater financial rewards.

  • Adams expressed confidence:

  • “We just have to perform, and I believe we can be among the top four.”
Legacy Vision

The government intends to showcase projects that demonstrate what Ghana has achieved through its participation in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This approach marks a significant shift in Ghana’s sports financing, ensuring that World Cup revenues are not just short-term gains but catalysts for long-term infrastructure and development.
