Ghanaians on social media have expressed dismay over former President Mahama's latest inconsistency on the Free SHS policy.

The former President and his party, the NDC, famously opposed and maligned the Free SHS policy when the then opposition NPP proposed it, first for the 2012 elections and then the 2016 elections, which the NPP won and implemented the policy instantly in 2017.

Following the overwhelming success and popularity of the Free SHS, with 5.7 million students benefitting so far, and the NPP getting lots of credit across the nation, former President seems to be revising his notes.

At an engagement with some pastors in Kumasi on Monday, Mahama, who still criticises the implementation of the Free SHS policy, spoke about his desire to review it by cancelling the double track system and providing what he called dedicated funding for it.

But Mahama's stance has been met with contempt, with a nu.ber of Ghanaians on social media slamming him for what they say are his double standards and inconsistencies.

The social media users recalled how Mahama himself vilified the Free SHS policy, calling it names and saying it was not a priority for Ghana and if he , as President at the time, had 2 billion Cedis, he would not spend it on Free SHS.

Others also recalled how the NDC as a party, staged a public demonstration against the policy and also sponsored adverts on TV against its implementation.

Interestingly, a number of those who posted on various platforms, showed past videos of former President Mahama speaking passionately against the Free SHS.

Which hitting at former President Mahama, some also took advantage of the situation to stage a total recall to mock Mahama for his government's failure to provide chalk to schools and also pay for capitation grants.

Free SHS has become an important issue in the 2024 campaign, with many stakeholders, including direct beneficiaries, the students, commending the NPP and its candidate.
