Tech giant, Google has apologized to Ghanaian officials over a mishap on Friday, 15 March 2019.

In a letter, Google’s Head Public Policy & Government Relations, West and Francophone Africa, Mrs Titi Akinsanmi conceded that there was major faux pas concerning its online currency converter, which erroneously displayed that a $1 was equal to GHS 22.72.

The situation caused panic among Ghanaians as the Google rate deviated far from the average interbank rate of $1 to GHS5.6.

The letter addressed to the office of Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, Mrs Titi Akinsanmi said: “We are aware of the issue of inaccurate conversions for Ghanaian Cedi currency on Friday, the 15th of March. This was caused by a minor glitch that was quickly fixed”.

It further added that, “always aim to provide people with the most relevant, useful information to help them to make the right decisions. But sometimes, there are temporary issues that can cause people to have undesired experiences, like the one this past Friday. This was regrettable”.
