The Government of Ghana has approved the procurement of 200 new transformers for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in a major move to strengthen electricity transmission and distribution systems across the country’s urban centres.

The announcement was made by Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during the opening of the 18th West Africa Mining and Power Exhibition (WAMPEX) held in Accra on Wednesday.

Minister Jinapor disclosed that ECG has been directed to immediately deploy the transformers, with the goal of enhancing the reliability and stability of power supply in support of national development objectives.

He noted that earlier challenges with power generation have been addressed, with the country now enjoying a stable energy supply and exporting electricity to neighbouring countries. The government’s current priority, he added, is to modernize and expand transmission and distribution infrastructure to meet growing demand.

The announcement was made during WAMPEX, West Africa’s largest mining and power industry forum, which this year attracted over 240 exhibitors from 30 countries and drew more than 5,000 participants.

The event serves as a key platform for industry professionals, policymakers, and investors to explore innovations, discuss challenges, and identify opportunities in the mining and energy sectors.

The conference was jointly opened by Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and Minister Jinapor, both of whom underscored the importance of energy in unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s mining sector.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Jinapor assured stakeholders in the mining sector that the government is committed to ensuring consistent and reliable electricity to support industrial growth and national development.

He emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the energy and mining sectors, especially in the context of Ghana’s green transition and sustainable development goals.

Minister Buah, for his part, stressed the importance of strategic investment in value addition, environmental sustainability, and protection of community rights within the mining sector.

Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, Acting CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, praised WAMPEX as a critical platform for driving development in mining, energy, and infrastructure across the region.

He highlighted the importance of sustainable mining practices, local content development, and adherence to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Nantogmah also pointed to increasing regional cooperation in West Africa as a powerful enabler of investment and growth, particularly in unlocking the region’s vast mineral resources.
