Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has announced that the government of Ghana has awarded contracts for the implementation of the ‘one village one dam policy.

According to the Member of Parliament for the Bimbilla constituency in the Northern Region, the flagship project to will take off soon after the awarding of the contract has been completed.

Mr. Nitiwul who made the revelation on Newsfile Saturday on Joy FM said; “Last week, contractors were issued appointment letters to go and construct 570 dams,”.

His revelation comes in response to Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, who pestered him about the huge number of staff at the Presidency.

“…if they [government] were constructing the village dams now I wouldn’t have a problem…,” the opposition MP argued.

The dams are expected to aid agricultural work in the country.

President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 election campaign, promised to build a dam in villages of the three regions of the north, via a well-planned irrigation policy.

He said a robust irrigation policy “one-village-one dam” will make Ghana crop all year round and eventually become a net exporter of most foodstuff.
