The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has invested an amount of €585,000 in procuring three sets of equipment and several tools for the Tema Shipyard and Dry dock Company.

This is to enhance efficiency as part of GPHA's plans to help revive the dilapidated dry dock company.

Mrs Alice Torkornoo, General and Business Administration Manager for Tema Shipyard said in an interview that, the procurement of these equipment and tools will aid in providing fast servicing of vessels at the dock.

She said the 45 Toner Crane and Cherry Pickers have arrived.

According to her, the 45 Toner Crane will also aid in the lifting of heavy equipment. The Cherry Pickers, she revealed, were to do sand plastering, hydro plastering and painting works more effectively.

Addressing some of the challenges facing the yard, she indicated that the facilities in which they work are dilapidated, therefore, urgent rehabilitation was needed

She added that since the establishment of the dry dock in 1965, nothing has been done to rehabilitate it, as it is in a deplorable state.

Between January and June 2016, the yard worked on six vessels, but from July 2016 to December 2016, GPHA was able to add 18 more vessels, bringing the total number to 24.

"And in 2017, we have done 34 as we are targeting 45 vessels in 2018," she added.

She said more can be achieved with the arrival of the equipment.
