Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways on Wednesday afternoon with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over newly promoted Young Apostles at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, clearing their outstanding Week 6 fixture in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League.
The Porcupine Warriors dominated the first half but failed to convert their chances. Six minutes into the second half, midfielder Hubert Gyau broke the deadlock with a powerful strike. However, the lead was short-lived as Richmond Opoku equalized three minutes later with a well-timed header following a slick team move.
Kotoko pressed relentlessly for a winner, and their efforts paid off deep into stoppage time when captain Samba O’Neil converted a controversial penalty to seal all three points.
The win lifts Kotoko to fifth place on 19 points, just two behind the league leaders, with one outstanding match still to play.
Karim Zito Concerned Over Injury Crisis
Despite the victory, head coach Karim Zito remains deeply concerned about the club’s mounting injury woes, which have affected squad depth and attacking fluency.
“What I’m going through in this club is not easy. If you don’t have mental toughness, you can’t,” Zito told AKSC TV. “Every day of the week, some players will get injured.”
He revealed that he had to force Dauda Saaka to play through discomfort and emphasized the need for mental resilience and tactical adaptability.
Kotoko’s recent form include:
- 1–0 win over Hearts of Oak
- 0–0 draw at Vision FC
- 1–1 draw vs Aduana FC
- 2–1 win vs Young Apostles
Zito has demanded a stronger mentality from his players, especially in home fixtures, stating:
“If we mean to win the league, these are the matches — all home matches should be wins no matter how.”
