Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and CAF 2nd Vice-President, has unveiled a comprehensive insurance policy for referees—a groundbreaking step in welfare and protection for match officials across Ghana’s domestic leagues.

The initiative, introduced on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, fulfils a pledge Okraku made during the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress in Prampram earlier this year.

Coverage and Benefits

All 280 referees in the Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s Premier League have been enrolled in the scheme, which includes:

  • Group Life Insurance

  • Critical Illness Cover

  • Permanent Disability Protection

  • Medical Expenses

  • Workmen’s Compensation

  • Additional support for spouses, children, parents, plus funeral assistance

“This is not just an insurance policy; it is a social protection package,” Okraku said, stressing the FA’s commitment to safeguarding referees and their families.

Logistics and Support

Alongside the insurance scheme, referees will now receive:

  • Two pairs of boots per season

  • Three sets of uniforms

  • Three sets of warm-up kits

  • Continued 50% discount on official travel through the FA’s partnership with STC

This marks the first time referees have been offered such a complete logistical package.

Raising Standards

Okraku also outlined measures to strengthen officiating standards:

  • Regular fitness tests

  • Performance-based appointments

  • Nationwide refresher courses

  • Expanded use of video analysis

  • Growth of female officiating and the Catch Them Young programme
A New Chapter

“Today signals the beginning of a future where referees step onto the pitch with peace of mind, knowing that their health, safety and dignity are protected,” Okraku declared.

The launch event was attended by senior officials from Enterprise Life Assurance Company, the Referees Committee, and male and female FIFA referees, underscoring its importance for Ghanaian football.
