GPL: Hearts held by Bechem united to a goalless draw

Hearts of Oak’s impressive home defensive run continued, but their winning momentum stalled after they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Bechem United in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

In a tense Matchday 21 encounter at the University of Ghana Stadium, the Phobians dominated long spells of the contest but could not find a breakthrough against well-organised visitors who defended with discipline and countered with purpose.

Hearts started the second half brightly after a 0-0 first half. In the 50th minute, a free-kick presented an early opportunity when Adamu floated in a teasing delivery, but striker Henry’s acrobatic overhead attempt drifted wide. Moments later, Raphael Amponsah was fouled in a promising area, though the resulting free-kick was comfortably dealt with by the Bechem defence.

The home side continued to probe with neat passing and confident build-up play from the back. A well-worked move in the 56th minute saw Karim attempt to pick out Henry inside the box, only for Bechem to read the danger and intercept at the crucial moment.

Bechem, however, showed they were not content to simply sit back. In the 73rd minute, after Hearts threatened through a dangerous Karikari cross, the visitors broke quickly on the counter, forcing Ali to make a decisive clearance for the Phobians.

As the clock ticked down, Hearts pushed harder. With five minutes remaining, Wayo stepped up to take a free-kick on the edge of the area, but his effort was bravely blocked by a solid Bechem wall, summing up the visitors’ resistance on the afternoon.

Five minutes of added time brought more urgency but no goals, as both sides settled for a share of the points. While Hearts extended their unbeaten home defensive record, the stalemate will feel like a missed opportunity in front of their supporters.

For Bechem United, the draw was a reward for organisation and resilience, as they frustrated one of the league’s strongest home sides and left Accra with a valuable point.
