The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a stern warning to its branches and transport stations nationwide, cautioning them against defying the recently announced 15% reduction in transport fares.
The union stated that sanctions will be imposed on operators who fail to comply with the directive.
General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, acknowledged reports from parts of the Ashanti Region indicating that some drivers had delayed implementing the new fares, citing late communication as the cause.
However, he maintained that steps have been taken to ensure full enforcement.
Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Saturday, May 24, Mr. Abulbire said ““The chairman has forwarded another press release and made it known that by tomorrow, if stations or branches working under us don’t comply with the directives, sanctions will be meted out to those terminals."
He further explained that one of the most effective measures being considered is barring non-compliant drivers from loading passengers which is a penalty drivers are especially keen to avoid.
“A particular punishment drivers do not like is to seize him or stop him from loading. So we think that is what we need to do,” he noted.
The fare reduction was introduced in response to falling fuel prices, with authorities expecting transport operators to adjust accordingly.
While some have adhered to the new fare structure, others continue to resist, citing high operational costs as a challenge.
